Why does a computer science degree matter to a professional programmer?
I'm a web developer (2 years of windows development and 2 years of web development till now). But my major at university was mechanical engineering and I had no official, academic training about computer programming.
Sometimes I hear my colleagues (all from computer background) talk about something that I vaguely understand. For example, when they talk about heap, I just feel vague, or they are pretty good at networking, while I really have difficulty understanding subnet mask.
These however, don't prevent me from working my job and delivering value products to my employer. But I feel like I'm missing something.
What I miss from not having computer academical background?
