Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm new to the whole scene, so I was wondering why programmers tend to be really passionate about this debate? Thanks.

Also, are these referred to as "text editors"?

Basically, programmers (and a lot of other people) simply tend to be pationate. About anything and everything. This has nothing to do with emacs or vim. You will have trouble finding any A vs. B type discussion, be it programming related or not, that doesn't turn into a full scale holy war at some point. –  back2dos Sep 17 '11 at 23:37
I was half expecting, "Why is there a debate? Everyone knows [Emacs | Vim] is better." –  Mark C Sep 18 '11 at 3:35

What's your question?

There are always holy wars about PHP vs. ASP.NET, C# vs. Java, Windows vs. Linux, and everything comparable and not so comparable.

Different communities appreciate different technologies, software products, etc., and don't have enough knowledge of the technologies, software products, etc. used by other communities. In this case, they are frustrated and are trying to show that what they use is better.

@anonymous downvoter: can you explain the reason for this downvote, so I would be able to improve the answer? Thank you. –  MainMa Sep 18 '11 at 0:29
Hey, I upvoted you man. One more question though, but it seems like the debates about prog languages, or the debates about operating systems are about some things that are really substantial, but come on, text editors?? –  Dark Templar Oct 14 '11 at 21:39
