I am currently a development manager and have done so for the past several years. I came into development through the route of an administration background (Someone left the dev manager role and I was offered the position). While I enjoy certain aspects of management, I find myself always gravitating back to the technical stuff. My desire is to leave management and become a developer. My problem is I do not have any experience as a developer. This leads me to my question. Has anyone else has moved from management into development role? If so, what was your experience? How would I transition into a development role?
I know of many development managers going back to development, i.e. having the technical knowledge already. So there are many people feeling the same as you do.
Since you are a development manager, you should have a lot of high level experience from the development field. I think that should be sufficient for starting as a junior developer.
If you want to gain some technical, low level experience in development, maybe you can delegate some more in your current position and contribute some development in the projects you are managing right now? I know a lot of managers who are still developing themselves, about 20% of their time.
