Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I graduate at the end of this year and I've been to a couple of interviews recently.
In almost all of them, i've been asked: "to which other companies have you applied to?"

Why is this important to them? What is the best way to answer this question?

FYI, I was caught out by this q and my answers involved some kind of lies.

You say "I just started looking"

Usually this question is from a recruiter who is fishing for information.

Maybe they will get a lead out of it. BUT If they think you will be getting an offer soon, they won't submit you to there client because of the chance they will also get you an offer, and you may reject it for the other one.

"I don't discuss my candidacy at other companies" would be an even better answer. –  Blrfl Oct 19 '11 at 20:22
