Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

The company I work for, which employs about 50 programmers, wants to start sharing knowledge in a "knowledge base"-like site. The main idea is to have an information repository where everyone can write solutions to problems which arise during our daily work. Since I do not know any knowledge management software, I would like to ask what can be a good solution to our problem given that we are looking for a free and easy-to-work-with solution. I have heard about Yammer, but I don't really know if that can be a good fit. What do you think?

Implement a Wiki.

Agree with bringer128 that confluence is good. It costs money but it's high quality and not too expensive.

If Confluence is too expensive you could try the wikipedia engine MediaWiki

OR

Try looking at something like OpenAtrium which is a "community in a box" based on Drupal that has a lot of useful functionality (although it's missing a wiki). If you prefer you could configure Drupal yourself to add the functionality you require.

OR

If you are a Microsoft shop with deep pockets you could try Sharepoint which is very capable but far from cheap.

Atlassian have an easy to use wiki product called Confluence. We use this at my work to collate information and facilitate knowledge sharing.

I find it is useful to document low-level design decisions here that make no sense being added to an SDD.

I suggest you check PHPKB knowledge base software at http//www.knowledgebase-script.com. Personally I believe its one of the best. We like that we can host it ourselves and that it comes with free updates for 1 year. Massive list of unrivaled product features, continously developed & the GUI is just simple & great.
