Does it matter that the SCJP study guide by Sierra and Bates are for SCJP and not OCP? I've also been told that they spend too much time on unnecessary topics.

From my own experience, SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Study Guide - Kathy Sierra is a very best one for SCJP exam, it fully covers the exam topics. CodeRanch Forum, it will helps at all the times in your java carrier, so register your self to clear your doubts with java professionals. Last but not least, Mock exam simulator. I used EPractize Labs SCJP 6 Certification mock exam simulator for my exam. I strongly recommend this three thinks for your preparation because i got 100% in my exam.
