Is the semantic web extended form of the relational database that the data should not be redundant? That is it should exist only as an entity and all its characteristics defined by the other entities should be linked via predicates.

The "Semantic web" also commonly refers to elements on a website being created by using the best possible HTML tag to describe their purpose. Like 'paragraph' tags for paragraphs and such. Just in case you get some confused HTML guys cross-posting in here. – Graham Jan 5 '12 at 20:35

Depends on your point of view. True, each entity has an unique identifier and therefore by definition can not be redundant. False, on the other hand using owl:sameAs two diffent entities can be defined as the same. Since everyone can define their own data and define extra definitions to data owned by someone else, therefore data can and often will be redundant. Even more, you never know whether you have retrieved all relevant data.
