We have a family business and I need to be in India, Delhi for 4 months as a part of a business trip.

I won't be doing much all day. I already have a degree in economics, but I also love software. Over the years I have taken different courses. I even took a degree in software engineering, completed the first 2 years but then I left for family reasons. It did not affect me as I already had a degree and also the family business.

Now I am thinking what are some of the things I can do in the 4 months that I will be there.

Programming lessons is one of them, in some of the languages that I am not familiar with, but what else?

Are there any certifications I can get?

The wording confuses me: You took a degree in software engineering, completed the first 2 years but left. Err.. have you actually attained the degree or not? – Spoike Jan 20 '12 at 10:19
What are your specialities? It is easier to find certifications that you can study and take exam for if you know what technology you want to work with. E.g. for Java programming there is the Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer (formerly known as JSCP) – Spoike Jan 20 '12 at 10:22

You could do what most software developers do... develop software.

Education is good, taking lessons and so on. But doing it in practice is better.

The OP took a degree in software engineer, but hasn't stated any software that he has made. From what I've gathered from clients so far, they're more inclined to hire professionals that have successfully done projects than ones that have certifications. Sure there are certs you can get, but in my experience it is easier to do freelancing once you've got some projects under your belt. – Spoike Jan 20 '12 at 10:18

There are lots of qualifications about. (for example if your doing C# then MCPD is probably the best option). You dont specify which langage you are intrested so I suggest you go down the local learning center and see what they offer.

You can also look on some freelancing websites for the lanagage your intrested in. That willl give you an idea of what qualifications are typical for freelancers in your field.

Since you don't give us too much information we can only give you general advice. A good idea is to check this programmer competency matrix, identify where you place in each category and go from there. See what you'd want to improve and search for a accreditation for it.

I'd suggest trying to be at least in the first level in each one before trying to go any further.
