How early do tech companies expect job applicants to apply, and whats the shortest amount of time it will take from applying to a company to beginning to work there? For example, if I'm graduating in May and wants to start working in July or August, when should I apply for jobs at tech companies? I assume small companies only look at applicants a few weeks before they are ready to work, but what about large companies, like Google or Facebook? |

I work for Red Hat Consulting, and we finished our first wave of college recruiting several months ago. We still have a second one coming up, but the point stands: it is never too early to start. Especially when it comes to college recruiting, it is a large and diverse talent pool. Employers with the resources are going to be rooting around, trying to find the best candidates. Larger employers are also going to be able to plan far enough in advance to have an idea of manpower needs around the time you are graduating. They may not even know what you will be doing with them, but would like to hire you and then plan your actual job closer to the start date. |

It all depends on the company. I know people who had interviews, and in some cases, job offers, 9 months before graduation. Other companies didn't even start posting full-time positions for a May-July start until March and April with interviews in April and May. If you are at a university, I would recommend talking to your university's career counseling office. I know such a service is pretty common in the US, and they have people who work with students in preparing resumes, determining when to apply, and interact with companies who are hiring particular majors. They would know which companies are posting positions for post-graduation hiring. Regardless of where you are, if there are any companies that you are particularly interested in, you can check out their website and even reach out to their HR departments or submit resumes to a generic resume drop if they have one and don't have any positions for the time you are interested in. Get your name out there and see if anyone is interested. |

Based on the input from your seniors during graduation. One of the ways to find out the appropriate time to apply for a job would be to take help of your seniors in your department who are currently placed. Seniors will let you know as and when there are recruitements which take place at the company they work for or another company where their colleagues are working. This helped a lot of my friends at their final year of graduation. Good luck! |
