More of this.

Nothing will improve you in one swoop.

There is no Royal Road.

It's simply a lot of work.

Keep doing what you're doing.

Thank you for this. :) That last sentence is especially what I needed. – John H Feb 8 '12 at 23:39
@johnh: If you think the last sentence is important, you'll need to read the answer again. The second sentence is the important one. – S.Lott Feb 9 '12 at 10:47
I agree that the second is the most important, but I've never believed in a silver bullet, although perhaps my question comes across that way. I guess what I'm trying to find out is the different approaches people use to solve these sorts of problems. I specifically want to broaden my thinking patterns to allow me to draw on several approaches, even though I know it'll take a lot of practice. That's why I think for me personally, the last one is the most important as the second one is easier for me to accept. – John H Feb 9 '12 at 16:23
"my question comes across that way". Completely. "trying to find out is the different approaches"? If that's the case, then remove the long backstory and code sample from the question. – S.Lott Feb 9 '12 at 16:27
