What are some good tools for introducing kids to programming?

Long-long time ago I had a great book by Frank DaCosta about writing adventure games in Basic, it had a great influence on me.

I would like to show the world of programming to my child too but I have two problems:

  • I can not found books like DaCosta's (but we can replace it with our fantasy so not a big deal)

  • Which programming language should I use? Small Basic?

HTML/Java Script. The reason is that it is ubiquitous, and easy to get into. It will teach them the basics that they will need to do pretty much any programming in the future. Why teach them basic that they will need to have a compiler for and can not show their friends. Javascript is far from perfect but it is a great language to learn about programming on because they can leverage what they learn early on in the future. – Chad Jul 3 '12 at 16:40
JavaScript, CSS3, and HTML5. Teaching kids a language that is used everywhere allows them to learn a skill once and apply it everywhere. if you teach kids the language of the web, they have the highest chance of future usage, without, having to transition languages and conquer more learning curves.Futureproof, It will serve them well. Low barrier of entry:Easy to implement, all that is needed is a text editor. Easy to learn. I had my first contact with anything like "Programming" with the Lego Mindstorms Package, and back then, it was kinda cool. You were able to develop solutions for problems really fast - and i learned something about if-and-else, loops, etc.

My father chose an old 90's Logo book, I'd say it went pretty well.
