I am currently using Visual Studio Express 2012 Desktop (the free version). I now have received source code with NUnit tests included.

I can not bring them to run with Visual Studio (not seeing them in the Test Explorer) and I seem not able to install the official NUnit Plugin.

Can someone confirm that the Express version does not support nUnit or tell me how to do it?

This is not particular to nUnit, Express editions of Visual Studio do not support installing plug-ins in general. See this SO post as one source.

Below I copied the summary from this post:

  • The Express SKUs only support installation of extensions that are classified as Templates (or Template Wizards) and Controls.
  • The Express SKUs do not support tool extensions. Which is anything that doesn't fall into one of the other categories (Template or Control).
  • VSIX files are marked, via the manifest, as to which applications they are compatible and can be installed.

IIRC VS 2012 Express includes their test runner features. NUnit has released an adapter so you should be able to take advantage of that.

Another option, though not visual studio, is to use NUnit's own GUI. Especially if you've got advanced NUnit use cases where the 3rd party stuff might not understand things.

VS 2012 Express can not load the adapter. I can not find it in the Extensions and Updates panel. – Marcel Dec 9 '12 at 19:19
I have never needed to use an Express version of VS, but videos I have seen about unit testing specifically recommended the free solution of using NUnit and then using its own GUI to run the tests. – Carson63000 Dec 9 '12 at 20:16
