What is the status of XUL, Gecko and Firefox?

I am interested in developing with XUL as I gather it is cross platform, but there are repeated reports of Mozilla deprecating it and it is all confusing.

I understand that the Firefox browser's user interface is based on XUL and I assume that Firefox browsers are going to be built on XUL for while (at least there is no successor announced yet). So if future versions of a complex program such as Firefox are still building on XUL then what is wrong with XUL itself and why shouldn't I invest in learning it?
