Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm not sure where to put this, but it does seem related to productivity. Feel free to migrate this question.

There are many diets available online for professional athletes, football players, etc.

Is there a similar thing for programmers?

I personally think that any self aware programmer will know that diet does indeed affect programming and learning performance.

I have never heard of any academic study into the best diet for programmers. I subscribe to the healthy body healthy mind idea, eat well and exercise lots. By one of my co-workers who is quite a good developer is quite happy to live off pop tarts and Nutella coated pancakes. – Klee Jan 17 at 21:30

It probably depends how often discussions about code degenerate into cage fights at a given company. – Erik Dietrich Jan 17 at 21:34

Specifically for programmers? No. Your body doesn't care what your job is. However, as Klee pointed out above, healthy body aids in a healthy mind. The two are one and the same.

I've read about studies that relate physical exercise to increased cognitive ability. Hit the gym a few times a week, and you'll feel better, and be in a better state of mind throughout the day. And if you're exercising regularly, you better be eating the right foods if you want to give your body the fuel it needs to get through the day.

Suffice it to say, your whole body is important. Eat well, and take care of your body, and it will return the favour, even when you don't realise it.
