Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've just read this exchange with huge interest: Why do game developers prefer Windows?

And now I'm worried about the current state and future of OpenGL & OpenCL, because I don't want history to happen all over again. I do understand that OpenCL provides interfaces to access OpenGL Objects, but that they "work" on Windows only at the moment afaik. What can we do to fix that?

It's sad, that I can't use OpenCL on any Linux Computer as of now. It requires me to install proprietary graphics drivers which don't work with the current Kernel, because support for "legacy" hardware was dropped.

I think you should reformulate your question. From how it looks now it is unclear what exactly you are asking. The faq could help you with that. – Saage Jan 28 at 11:59
I don't understand the concern. Support for Windows and Linux can be maintained for both provided the projects in question keep addressing the problems that surface. The proprietary graphics drivers really isn't a problem as users we can fix. – Ramhound Jan 28 at 14:19
