Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Jeff Atwood posted back in 2006 an article entitled "Programmers Bill of Rights".

To summarize:

  1. Every programmer shall have two monitors

  2. Every programmer shall have a fast PC

  3. Every programmer shall have their choice of mouse and keyboard

  4. Every programmer shall have a comfortable chair

  5. Every programmer shall have a fast internet connection

  6. Every programmer shall have quiet working conditions

Is it reasonable to expect a workplace to provide their programmers with all these items?

I'm sure not all workplaces do (mine doesn't), but I would like to know if each of these items can reasonably be expected for most programming jobs.

From the FAQ: "Chatty, open-ended questions diminish the usefulness of our site and push other questions off the front page.". Can this be rephrased into a question focusing on a single point? – whatsisname Feb 4 at 5:52
I just removed the extra text. I was interested in knowing if the points in the bill are actually fulfilled in most places, or is it just too good to be true? – user73964 Feb 4 at 5:55
Hi @hdman I've edited your question a bit to try and focus on the specific question you appear to be asking, and to get it reopened. I've voted to reopen it, but it still needs 4 other reopen votes to get reopened. (For what it's worth though, I started with 4, 5, and 6, and got 1 and 2 after explaining to the company about how it would overall be a cost savings to them because it would increase my productivity) – Rachel Feb 4 at 17:20

I have created a question on Meta to discuss the applicability of this question and if it could be revised to a form that would make it on-topic. meta.programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/5508/… @Rachel - FYI for the meta Q. – GlenH7 Feb 4 at 17:51
