How effective is it to read programming materials in a (human) language one isn't fluent in, but that isn't totally foreign (e.g. because it's similar to one's native language or another language one knows well)?
I'm thinking of trying it, hoping it will improve my knowledge of both the programming subject and the language the materials are written in, but I wonder if many other people have gone down this road and could offer observations and pointers of the process: e.g. maybe the pros and cons of doing it; aspects that make it easier or harder; etc.
Edit: I'm asking about things written in other human languages; sorry for the confusion. Also, I just realized my question is a little English-centric anyway, since reading materials in English is par for the course for many programmers from other language backgrounds.
