I want to build a private online social network for some companies. I know many developers, some of them use PHP, some use Python and some use .NET (ASP.NET).
I have heard good things about PHP such as being secure, easy for developers to develop with and flexible. Furthermore, I know that it is popular and we can build other applications in it or use some ready-to-use scripts.
The important point, which my question will be related to it, is the performance. It is an important issue for us, and when I talk about performance here I mean how fast the site is displayed to the user, so I can say I need the download time of the pages to make the user feels the speed.
I have seen many comparisons between PHP and ASP.NET for example and ASP.NET was always faster. I want to know 'When does PHP become slow?' Is the slowness , for example, related to the number of users who are using the site or is it slow because it is interpreted so it is always slower than others?
I want to reach to a conclusion to know if PHP will be my best option so I can start making a contract with PHP developers or change to another stack.
