Has anyone done the Oracle Master (old SCJD) Examination?

What are your thoughts on this examination? Is it worth taking it? Not really from the point of learning anything (as I doubt I will), but from the perspective of simply obtaining the certification to further my career (you know, business likes it when you have actual certifications behind your name ...sigh...).

If you have written it? Do you have any tips / tricks? Or any do's and dont's?

Thanks!

It is controvesal, mainly because the industry does not really demand this and the exam itself is not that hard to pass, as you point out.

In my opinion,it is valuable though. The reasons are

  1. It makes you study. Weather the study would have direct influence to your work or not, I believe any knowledge would eventually help at some point,at some way.

  2. Sometimes, the study itself makes my productivity better. Cause I have this feeling that I am improving constantly. I feel like I am living with my best. Generally, I feel good when I study for my job.

As you may know by now, I have this certification along with several more.

Thanks for the honest answer. I agree with you in all your points mentioned. It is true that the simple act of studying is enough reason. – Nico Huysamen Nov 24 '10 at 6:31
I'm have no experience of this particular certification, but studying for a Microsoft MCTS exam did teach me a lot - even though I thought I knew the subject matter inside out after a number of years working with it - by covering areas of the .NET framework that I've simply never had reason to use in doing my job. I daresay most programming certifications would be similar. – Carson63000 Nov 24 '10 at 8:34

Certifications are only valuable if you don't have actual experience. When hiring senior-level people, I ignore their list of certifications entirely.

It is a valuable certification ever because when you get this certification you can manage simple java projects easily, it helps me more for my carrier. i completed this certification 9 months before, actually i used SCJD training lab simulator. This simulator has One assignment with source code, it was so good. You can get the basic ideas from this also you can practice with sample mock exams.

best of luck for your carrier
