I personally prefer to say I am a developer.

I have seen many more subjective questions get closed that were more relevant to the sites objective than this. No offense but how is this relevant to professional programmers. –  Ominus Jun 4 '11 at 2:47

As a programmer (web developer) I say "I make things like Google Search, Yahoo Search, Facebook, Flickr..."

What? .... At least it stops the 'incredibly bored, programmer stereotype facial expressions' you usually get when you say 'I'm a programmer' to people :P
