I realized something peculiar over the years, I cannot think deeply while sitting on my desk! Whenever I try to solve a hard problem, design some parts of a program, and generally do anything that requires more than two minutes of pure thinking, I get off my desk and start walking.

Whether I pace up and down the hallway, walk in circles around a table, or just have a small walk outside, I find that my thoughts become much clearer. I come up with my best ideas while walking, and I can solve the hardest problems much faster. Of course, people who see me doing it indoors usually give me a weird look and think I'm insane, but it doesn't matter, I'm more productive this way!

I've seen people do other things to help them think, such as tap a pencil on the desk, squeeze a stress ball, or throw their heads backwards and stare at the ceiling. I am interested in what you people do to trigger your thought process.

I just walk away from the problem for a bit. If I'm at work, and I'm stuck, I'll take a walk to the convenience store and get a soda or, if the timing is right, I'll go out to grab some lunch. If I'm at home, I'll go do some mindless task at home like emptying the dishwasher or taking care of some laundry.

To me the key is walking away from the problem in your mind; stop thinking about it. A lot of times, that will give me a fresh perspective when I come back to it even if I come back to it 10 minutes later.

+1 for "stop thinking about the problem" – Camilo Martin Jan 11 '12 at 2:27

When I'm having trouble focusing on something, I'll set it aside for the night. A lot of times, giving my subconscious some time to form associations helps, and I'll come up with a good idea either in a dream, or the next morning while I'm in the shower. (Not sure why in the shower, specifically, but it tends to happen a lot there.)

I'll grab a pen and paper and start drawing out the problem at hand. I can focus a lot better this way and organize my thoughts better.

Sometimes I'll just open up notepad for the same effect.

MindMapping could help a lot. The tool is unimportant, but the ability to see connection between ideas is just natural.

Pen and paper work sometimes better, if you need to draw more than just a diagram. – Camilo Martin Jan 11 '12 at 2:28
