A project idea for project ideas?

I think this has happened to many of us. Sometimes we find a great idea for a project and obviously think this is the greatest idea ever but then one of the following things will happen:

  • The project is a small one, so you might actually give it a try and see how it goes.

  • The project is a big one, even a risk, and you just need a good programmer's community that you could just discuss your idea with them and see what they say and even get some help to make it happen. And there's always the possibility of others stealing your idea which is really bad.

So could anyone suggest an online community or place or even method of talking about ideas and the ways of developing them? and do you think it's a good thing to tell others about your idea?

+1 for interesting question. Also: isn't SO good for this? What's the general view on posting "this is my project idea, what do you think?" questions here? – Anders Holmström Jan 12 '11 at 11:37
@Anders: I like the idea of being able to do that; however, I believe it would be difficult to maintain guidelines for posting. As a matter of fact, you should bring this suggestion up on meta. – IAbstract Jan 13 '11 at 23:40

Project ideas need like minded people to discuss feasibility in implementation, i.e. programmers need to talk to programmers about a programming project. What SE has done is tremendous - it is much more than a site trilogy about computers. This means that not only do we have the programmers to talk about a project, but there are also thousands of others who would be able to chime in and offer their thoughts from a user standpoint.

I believe that there needs to be something where people can just converse in a forum setting. I don't want to go to another site. This question on meta.SO has a great idea. I think we need a lounge (lounge.StackExchange) with actual forums. I consider it the 5th dimension...

You should take a look into onstartup, is not entirely about discussing project ideas but you can find people ready to discuss any idea, check it out.
