Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

When looking for jobs, I'm not sure how to determine whether the company is fun to work for or not.

I want to work in companies that are open, innovative, and make a good contribution to the world of computer science.

For example, Dropbox looks like a very fun company and its existence is very important. How do I spot this in job advertisements?

EDIT: I should note that I live in Australia, so many of the fun companies that I know does not have any office here. I know only a handful of fun companies in Australia – including Google in Sydney. But I don't know that many.

You may be unable to spot it in job advertisements directly. Some companies (especially small ones and start-ups) will write a "fun" job ad. That might be one indicator of the work environment, although you have to be careful of them trying to compensate for something potentially bad (such as being unable to pay you for a long time).

The best way to determine if a company is fun to work for is to research the company. Plug their name into Google, ask people you know if/what they've heard of them, etc. If you decide to apply and get an interview, you can also see if you can speak to any of the developers there and get some inside perspective.

Is that TechCrunch article the first time you found-out about Dropbox? Anyone who follows Y Combinator has known about Dropbox for a long time. For that matter, most readers of TechCrunch would have known who Dropbox is too.

Sounds like what you want is a start-up. So instead of reading job ads, go read the news. Follow TechCrunch, Hacker News, Git Hub repositories, niche publications (HPCwire?), etc. Then you'll know who the interesting companies are.

No, the thing is I live in Australia. Many of those companies are US-based... I guess I should add that to my question. I know a few companies which are like Dropbox in Australia, but not as many as US-based ones. –  Enrico Susatyo Feb 11 '11 at 5:20
