This question came from our site for professional and enthusiast programmers.

It depends on how Apple gets the mac app store set up. No way to answer this now (we can't predict the future). –  Rafe Kettler Mar 3 '11 at 19:26
@Rafe what do you mean how it gets it setup? It is already out. The answer is what @Julio said, that right now you can't do it. –  RyanJM Mar 3 '11 at 19:33
@RyanJM it's already out now? I thought that was Lion thing. Oh well, I don't use Mac. –  Rafe Kettler Mar 3 '11 at 19:34
@Rafe Kettler: Yeah, Apple released it in an update to 10.6 about a month ago. You're probably confused because they still tout it as a Lion feature, for whatever reason. –  Chuck Mar 3 '11 at 20:16
This isn't really a programming or programmer question. Would it fit on the Apple SE site? –  David Thornley Mar 4 '11 at 16:43

There's no way to do that at the moment unfortunately.

I would suggest you add some sort of optional registration on the iPhone app, and offer the Mac app for free to those customers through a download outside the Mac App Store.

You and looneydoodle have the same point! I will have to host the Mac Version in my own server for those who have my iPhone version! –  Alexandergre Mar 4 '11 at 22:47

The easiest way to do it would be to give you iphone users a private link and a reg key to get their free version and keep the app paid on both the stores. As far as I know, the stores are independent of each other.

I have actually found an answer which doesnt need secure hosting/login etc.

I will have 2 version of the mac app. version a will be hosted at app store for x USD. version b will be host at my own ftp for free. everybody can download it BUT the app wont start if you enter a wrong key.

The unique key is generated from the iPhone. for security reasons I wont mention how the security code is generated. But I will help other with this kind of question! anyway thanks for inspiring me to solve this problem!:D

The only way to give away a paid app for free on either the Mac or iOS app store is to use a promo code. But unfortunately, you can only generate 50 codes per version.
