I'm preparing for MySQL certification, nowadays officially titled:

Oracle Certified Professional, MySQL 5.0 Developer certification

After looking through MySQL forum it looks like most people recommended this book:

http://www.amazon.com/MySQL-5-0-Certification-Study-Guide/dp/0672328127/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299972594&sr=8-1

Which as far as I learned was the official preparation source at the time when MySQL was controlled by MySQL AB and Sun.

Now, however - Oracle officially doesn't recommend this book. To be precise, I don't know what they recommend. I could only find this "value package":

http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=532

Can someone who got MySQL certification confirm that this book is what they have used? Also, if there is any other moderately priced study materials out there - please let me know.

Update

I passed second one Monday March 28th. I have to say second exam was more complicated. So I have two exams now and waiting for my package from Oracle. Took me approximately 2.5 week total to prepare for both exams.

With 0.5 weeks for 1st and 2 weeks for 2nd.

Also - to everyone who wants to take it: read the book thoroughly and go through all questions on the CD that comes with that book! This helps immensely.

Questions on the exam are very similar to those on the CD.

Hi. I took the second part of cmdev certification in italy last january and the official book you've linked covers all subjects. –  nick rulez Mar 13 '11 at 0:04

thanks Nick. extremely helpful. I'll get that book then instead of "value package" for 3700$. Oracle is pure evil:) –  Stann Mar 13 '11 at 0:13

What exam are you preparing? –  nick rulez Mar 13 '11 at 0:14

That book is perfect and I've learned a lot of things studying it. My advice is to make a lot of practice because questions are not mnemonics. CMA is very easy and the "more difficult" question you can find in it is "what's the result of select null = null? " :). CMDEV exams are more difficults. By the way they required just 60% of correct answers to pass. So 42-43 correct answers on 70 questions are enough to pass. Be aware that on cmdev exams a lot of questions require multiple choices. –  nick rulez Mar 13 '11 at 0:26

Get the book. It's pretty thorough. I got the MySQL developer cert before Oracle bought them. I still use the book as a reference every once and a while.

I can't imagine there are many questions they could ask that couldn't be covered with the material covered in that book.

nice. I've just passed first exam after only 2 days of preparation. –  Stann Mar 15 '11 at 20:06

@Andre - congrats! Just a heads up: I remember the second exam being more difficult than the first. –  davidhaskins Mar 15 '11 at 20:23

Thanks. This will be helpful since I passed this one with 62% over required 60%. obviously I should have invested more time in preparation than 2 days:) –  Stann Mar 15 '11 at 21:32

mmm. I'm confused. Someone just told be that 5.0 Exam is obsolete and there is 5.1 exam available. I don't see 5.1 exam anywhere on either mysql website or oracle website. Can somebody confirm that 5.0 certification is the latest active certification? –  Stann Mar 15 '11 at 21:34
