Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am a Java Web Application Developer. I have an idea for a web application project that I am working on.

I personally believe that the app has potential to become a popular website. Currently I am working on it as a developer with two others in the project. The development costs has been almost null uptil now since we are doing in-house development with open source technologies.

But the costs are now going to appear as we'll have to host our application online on the servers. Right now I see this as the major expense as we go live.

Are there any ways by which we can smartly deal with this hurdle ?
We want to minimize the costs as much as possible, or even better, if we can make this null, perhaps, through some partnership agreement with the hosting solutions provider!? Your opinions are highly solicited!!

Please enlighten with your experiences and knowledge. Thanks so much, for your time !

AWS Free Usage Tier may be worth a look in your case. I don't think you would have many other choices given your web app is written in Java.

yes definitely I need something sort of free for my intial days... –  aklin81 Mar 26 '11 at 19:09

I would suggest starting with a VPS (because they are affordable). When you find you need to upgrade, it shouldn't be too difficult to move to dedicated hosting.

You may find blueprint useful for transitioning.

dedicated hosting is no way I can afford from the beginning, also I would prefer if there are any ways I could make it for even less than VPS & cloud. Cant the cloud hosted apps be easily migrated ?? –  aklin81 Mar 26 '11 at 19:12

@aklin81, You can get a low-end VPS for $10 a month. If you want to give your application the best chance for success, I wouldn't suggest using anything less. –  dan_waterworth Mar 26 '11 at 19:19
