For technical knowledge I think it would be best to look at different domains, see what is the most poplular solutions and then try them out yourself. Try to get jobs at different places.

Ultimately though the thing that will make you become an architect is mostly your people skills. Nearly every developer thinks they know the best architecture so to be successful you need to be a great diplomat, be able to get management to trust you and developers to do what you say. I'd start with books like Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.

It is not just like "what should I read before making a loan". It will require to chop 100 square kilometers of forest to print everything that must be read. Bruce Schneier is a good start I suppose.

I think that it does not really matter what you read, if you read something relatad - it's ok anyway. There is a lot of must-do things. Like "use WEP exploit", "sniff lan","implement rsa", "submit a suspisious file for virus analisys", btw "code trojan".

Along with Tanenbaum's books. I recommend:

Computer Networks: A system's Approach

Security in Computing

Cryptography and Network Security

I think Tanenbaum is the standard text on all things networking.
