Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am taking a Java class that teaches based on a Java 5 book and the prof. says that if we get the Java certification then we instantly pass the class, sounds like a deal. My question is, since I want to go for the most recent certification (Java 6), what can I expect to be different? I was told that Java 6 is so similar to Java 5 that learning Java 5 is not useless, but what about when it comes to exam differences?

I'd rather just pass the class than pay several hundred dollars for the cert - but that's just me. –  NickC Apr 12 '11 at 18:23
@Renesis yeah well, I'm not doing so well thus far because of sheer laziness and if I withdraw from the course I lose financial aid so, this may actually be a good out ;) –  ioSamurai Apr 12 '11 at 22:26
if you have to pass it, do not miss this book, no matter what book the class already has: amazon.com/SCJP-Certified-Programmer-Java-310-065/dp/0071591060. I'd also advise reading it once, and then cramming the whole book again right before the test. –  NickC Apr 12 '11 at 22:30
@Renesis thanks, the book for the class is actually the same one just the the Java 5 exam, I might order this one too... –  ioSamurai Apr 13 '11 at 13:35
no, they should be mostly the same. I have the Jaca 5 one too, I just linked to the current version. –  NickC Apr 13 '11 at 13:47

Syntax wide there is basically no difference. If you know enough to pass the Java 5 exam, then you should be able to pass the Java 6 exam with the same score.

There are some differences. Few things have been added (Navigable Sets and Maps and Console class). But yes the score should not be very far way from a java 5 exam.
