Here's where you compare - microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products – ChrisF Apr 20 '11 at 15:08
And here's where you buy: microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/buy (use the drop down to localize if not in the US) – Steve Haigh Apr 20 '11 at 15:13
I was hoping there was somewhere that sells it for cheaper. – Blankman Apr 20 '11 at 15:38

Do you have a .edu email address? You can download Visual Studio 2010 Professional for free from Microsoft Dreamspark.

Visual Studio isn't particularly cheap no matter where you look. You can get it from Microsoft directly or get a slight discount at Amazon (they also have the upgrade license available).

Your other options are Microsoft programs like WebsiteSpark for web developers, BizSpark for startups, and DreamSpark for students.

Beyond that... full Visual Studio licenses (not acquired through the programs above or through the MSDN-AA) are transferrable, so you can try eBay or other similar services.

As for which edition you should get, if you're concerned about price, Professional is likely your only option as the price skyrockets after that.

The 2nd choice are fine. I have WebsiteSpark I've got VS 2010, MS SQL Server 2008 R2 web edition, and Windows Server 2008 R2. – Emad Mokhtar Apr 25 '12 at 20:08
