I'm searching for an explanation of how MapReduce works with visuals. Specifically, a flow chart of actions and pictures of how it deals with information on the stack/memory in parallel to return.

Does anyone have source for this?

MapReduce is not about NoSQL but distributed computing, so I retagged. –  Jonas Sep 27 '10 at 21:37

Here's a video lecture I saw a while ago that explains it, with diagrams and everything. Unfortunately, the code examples are all in Scheme, but the explanation the professor gives of how it works is detailed and quite good.

The lecture notes from that video (and the one right after it) are also available here www-inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs61a/reader/vol2.html –  Hoa Long Tam Sep 24 '10 at 17:28

I just pulled a description out of a internal hadoop training I gave and uploaded it to slideshare. It describes the operations in terms of aggregation of geometric shapes: http://www.slideshare.net/jrideout/mapreduce
