Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I generally use cakephp but after watching some MS videos of MVC3 it seemed to go fairly quick. I understand the intellisens in VS2010 works classes and for databases. It seems like once you know the editor and framework basics this would be very handy.

My question is, do things like intellisense actually speed things up noticeably?

Are you asking about VS, C#, or MVC? –  SLaks Jun 29 '11 at 17:40
You can get Intellisense for PHP. jcxsoftware.com/vs.php –  user16764 Jun 29 '11 at 18:35

IntelliSense is, IMHO, the single best writing-time (as opposed to build-time or debug-time) feature of an IDE.

+1 I totally agree. IntelliSense will change your world. Whether it will help you make sites faster depends on your understanding of the framework, though. –  CamelBlues Jun 29 '11 at 17:43

Being a web developer in the .NET area for a few years now, things like intelisense do boost up productivity, plus msft is spending a LOT of money into making developers productivity as high as possible, and that does pay off...

I think to date, there is not a single IDE that is as a good player for both front end and backend for web technologies like VS2010..

Intellisense is just a proprietary name for code completion. Every modern IDE has it - it's not unique to Microsoft. And yes, it does speed up development.

Altought there are several PHP MVC frameworks, the differences in the programming languages, and features like code completition makes asp.net + M.V.C., easier to use.

Intellisense is very nice. There are other tools with similar capabilities but very few that work quite so well.

I use textmate/e-texteditor for Rails development and have found it is a huge productivity boost once I've learned the code completion macros. They have a bundle for cakephp it might be worth checking out if you don't feel your current editor is as productive as it could be. Its not the same thing as intelli-sense but it is pretty nice.
