How Can I Know Whether I Am a Good Programmer?

I am sure many of us think of themselves as good coders, my question is how to be sure of this? How to know that i am 'above average'? How to compare myself against other coders? I dont mean taking formal tests, on a day-to-day basis, what is the way to evaluate oneself?

How do you rate on the Programmer Competency Matrix?

Perhaps you should ask yourself why you'd need to :) Comparing programmers is like comparing IQ's, you might get a number but what does it really mean? That you're good at algorithms? That you're a good team player? That you're an efficient programmer? That you have good social skills? That you're organized?

The only way to "measure" a programmer is by looking at the things he's done and the things he's doing. Just concentrate on getting better all the time, it's a continous process and the more you learn the more you realize you don't know :)

sometimes it is good to know that you are good at what you are doing – CyprUS Jul 29 '11 at 9:22
In my experience it's always better to assume that you're not :) I.e you shouldn't have bad self confidence but you should always question whether something can't be done better – konrad Jul 29 '11 at 9:24
