Programmers Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional programmers interested in conceptual questions about software development. It's 100% free, no registration required.

There is a quote about machine translation that I thought was famous but I'm having trouble pinning down just who said it and when, and what the exact wording was. Here is one version:

"Every time I fire a linguist my system improves"

Also I was sure I'd read recently that this person has been hired by Google to develop Google Translate but I can't find any reference to it now when I look - is that true?

The best I can find is that it was somebody called Eduard Hovy but there is no Wikipedia article on such a person and I can't find much linking this name to Google.

Fred Jelinek is the originator of that quote according to Wikiquote. The article has various citations as to the first instance of use but it appears to be some time in the mid 1980s.
