Good day!

About 7 months ago I gave up on my desktop computer in favor of a portable laptop but recently I've been having a lot of discomfort during/after my programming sessions caused by inadequate body position.

Usually I tend to lie down similar to an 'L' rotated 90 degrees counter clock wise. In the beginning everything was alright: it seemed much more comfortable but now I think it might be wrong as there is (and I can feel it) a lot of strain on my back neck.

How do you position yourself when working on a laptop for long hours?

I know this will probably get closed, but would anyone but a programmer type in an "'L' rotated 90 degrees counter clock wise" – JeffO Aug 7 '11 at 22:02

Normally, like I would if I was working on a desktop computer. Regular desk, a sturdy wooden chair (I don't like ergonomic chairs or anything of the kind) and a normal posture.

Worked for me. YMMV though!

Lying down is not a normal working position. The fact that you're working on a laptop doesn't mean you have to hang from the ceiling while working on it.

Try different positions, with at least one option being as ergonomically sound as possible.

Since I've started working from home and could create my own office, I've been compelled to do this in a non-traditional fashion. Since many of these positions may not be ideal, I'm preparing many of them. I have: a recliner, drafting table, kitchen table, couch, patio furniture and even sitting up in bed.
