comment Languages on a resume: Is it better to put “C/C++” or “C, C++”?
by this filtering mechanism, I'm totally screwed, in the languages section I've written "C++/Java" - oops... :D

@Erik, I was sat there scratching my head for a minute... and thought you'd made an error in the wording... I like it, especially evil...

@Ben, I thought the OP was interested in C++...anyway, just nitpicking...

Should that be, when can/should you explicitly call the destructor? Or should that be another question...

Not sure about your second point, I'd ask why are you using malloc() in C++ in response...

comment How do you ascertain the quality of a potential employer's code before you take a position?
@Chris, that's defeatist! ;) There are many reasons for bad code, but if the attitude of the folks there is one that strives for change, why not??

comment How can I find out what a job title means at a company?
@Rob, that's the neat thing with a site like this, we can agree to disagree. As I said in my answer at my previous place, your technical level was almost secret (this controlled your pay), we had outward titles like Analyst/VP/MD etc, aside from MD, the others really didn't mean much in terms of pay... The thing is that a random sample from this site, will come across a plethora of different situations where it's most likely that no two are alike, IMHO, titles like Senior this or that is simply fanning egos...

@WKN, so what does "staff engineer" vs. "senior software engineer" tell you about the person? Titles are for folk who want to play politics in the office.. Everyone else just gets on with it..

comment Why does Java's String class not implement a more efficient indexOf()?
This routine is optimized under the covers (when available) via SSE4.2 instructions - if your hardware supports it, just enable support with the appropriate JVM flag.

comment Is it reasonable to expect that a senior developer knows what OOP design patterns are?
+1, I agree with this, knowing the academic term and a brief description of a given pattern (which typically has been my experience in being interviewed) IMHO provides no information on whether I know what I'm doing when it comes to actually implementing something. If you truly want to see if they can, set them a test - importantly make the criteria the approach rather than the result...

comment Why can't there be an “universal” programming language that serves all purposes?
we as a species have an innate ability to disagree (by virtue of our individuality), therefore we will never agree on what is universally required, and hence there will never be one (at least not one created by humans!)

comment What should I learn that I missed by not going to school?
What are you missing that is relevant to your work you do now, and you have ambitions to do? Learn that - there is far too much I don't know, but I'd rather spend my time learning what I need to know..
