comment Is what someone publishes on the Internet fair game when considering them for employment as a programmer?
@Rox: I don't lump Google stalking in with stalking, as it's not normally harmful, and most Internet users will do it at some point. It's just a turn of phrase I use when looking up details about someone by using Google, because if you're not relying on the information they gave you then you are snooping on them.

@Rox: Have you got to someone's Myspace page through reading company literature? If you got there by taking someone's name from a company website and Googling them, then you Google stalked them. But if you're correct, that Google stalking is prevalent, then the risk is quite high and so the Myspace page should be taken into account.

comment How do you explain refactoring to a non-technical person?
I was going to post some analogy with a garage or shed, but this is better.

comment Which comments instantly ring alarm bells when a programmer says them?
Damn right I shouldn't need to understand the DB structure. That's the DB admin's job. If the admin's made the structure so obscure that it's function is not apparent, I'm gonna be hacked off.

comment Pronunciation in programming?
@christopher Creutzig: Might / be backslash in a rtl language? I've tried to get myself to think right slash for / and left slash for ``, but I can't make it stick.

Ah, the good old "users as testers" scenario. I knew it well.

comment I'm working on a PaaS similar to Heroku or Google App Engine, and was curious which pricing structure users prefer. Ideas?
I prefer the structure where I pay nothing, ever ;)

+1 for higher cost of IP over source code. get the customer to sign a license agreement saying what they can and can't do with your code, so as to protect your IP.

@Dean J: a smart pointer is a pointer that can free the memory that has been allocated to it when it is no longer used.
