User control is a ASP.NET term I believe. It refers to a single "element" in a page like a button or a form - in this case they seem to have built a set of 3 user controls - the search form, the search criteria datalist and the search results table...

I don't really agree, while a very convincing argument, it is based on the assumption that if you choose a commercial software technology you will be given support by the company selling the software. Well companies can go away - the mainframe companies like DEC are a prime example. They can also simply stop supporting the software like Microsoft with IronRuby or even Silverlight. Ultimately the only maintenance and support you can trust is your own ability to fix issues and that's easier with open source IMO.
