comment Commercial vs Personal software licenses
I was also thinking about pointing this out for future readers, I was pretty sure the tool you wanted to use would be fine, but I have seen some messes created where people did something in a tool that the company didn't have and then left.

comment What are some good assignments for an introductory course, to reach today's students?
When I taught, I always used real life types of examples and they were plenty interesting to my students because they were serious about their profession. Just becasue you use business examples doesn't mean you can't start with basic techniques. It does mean that the young devs can more easily relate their knowledge to the tasks they will actaully need to do once they are employed. I am not interested in colleagues who can only work if it is fun. We don't try to make civil engineering fun or the study of medicine fun. This is serious stuff, it deserves the respect of being taught seriously.

Then set up an environment that you refresh from Prod just before you run the automated script. Use it for nothing else.

comment Which database schema should I pick?
JOins are good, you want joins. You just need to index teh joins fields properly, databbases want and expect joins.

comment Advice on designing web application with a 40+ year lifetime
The data is what needs to last for over 40 years, hire a database specialist to design it. Preferabley someone with HIPAA experience. This is not easy stuff (you are likely going to need encrypting and auditing of both table changes and data changes for instance)and is critical if you are storing any kind of patient records.

comment Database is performing slow, even all the tables are having normalization
I would disagree, if I asked this question in an interview I would expect the interviewee to say a lot of other things before mentioning denormalization. Denormalization in an already existing database is a serious risk, I would expect the person to not suggest that as the first alternative, although I would expect given the way the question is worded that they would mention denormalization and both the pros and cons.
