comment What is the alternative to an enterprise portal strategy in the Java space?
+1. The "failure" of portals is definitely a failure of the planning.

comment Refactoring While Programming
agreed. It is often easier to refine ugly working code into beautiful code than trying to do it from scratch. You just have to be honest and give yourself the time to clean your solution once it is working.

comment Strategy for building an application to replace a large spreadsheet
+1. Anything like this is essentially starting from scratch. As a massive spreadsheet grows and develops, features just keep being tacked on without looking at the bigger picture. Likely many users contributed small pieces without any single user understanding the whole thing. There's likely huge opportunities to improve the design, but you'll have to be very careful to gain the users' acceptance...

comment Best practices for moving large MS Access application towards .Net?
Great question. This is a very practical problem that a lot of non-software companies that grow quickly often face and gets thrown in the lap of developers - when the "do everything" Access database can't scale to their growing needs.

comment How effective are “game programs” in interviews?
@maple_shaft: You're definitely right in that Monopoly does lend itself to OO very well. A lot better than something like checkers that can have an extremely simple backing model. The challenge was more in that Monopoly has a ton of very specific rules that unless you played it recently, might not be on the top of your head. I found myself spending more time trying to remember the specifics of Monopoly instead of working towards a clear goal. I did get the job though. :)

@maple_shaft: I got Monopoly on my last interview... a little bit more complex than checkers, especially when I haven't played it in probably 15 years...
