Perhaps another factor being the name of the pattern you're using? A word like "factory" already has a very software-friendly meaning outside of the Factory Pattern: A thing that makes things.

That's a great idea-- "...have the factory that creates the object wire up events to the public methods of the object. It's easier to test, and makes it externally visible what kinds of events the CUT needs to be tested for."
