comment Do ORMs enable the creation of rich domain models?
@Augusto Well... you're app developer, so you have to decide whether it makes sense for certain object to exists with certain fields set to NULL. If it makes sense (for certain task for example) then let it be. If not, ask the author of SP to provide more data, so you can create your objects.

@Augusto I think gbjaanb meant that in case of SP you have query plan precompiled which saves a bit of time. As for precompiling queries with never datases, I'm not sure if we refer to the same feature, but some RDBMS have optimisatiosn for badly written queries. They observer & analyze queries so that they can substitute more efficient query plans at runtime. This only pays off if you have app where you aren't able to finetune queries. The problem with SP speed gain is that usually it is quite small. You would have to deal with really long and hairy query to get any meaningfull speed gain.

comment PHP and performance
Ok, you're right, but can I still claim that my site is written in PHP? If yes, then anybody can also claim Facebook is written in PHP. In other words, it all boils down to how you understand the term "programming language". Is it only the combination of valid statements or is it also runtime enviroment. I prefer the first meaning and that is why the HipHop thing doesn't change much for me. So pretty much i'm that FaceBook dude you mentioned :)

As for the Facebook/HipHop thing, it doesn't change much. They still write PHP statements, don't they? There is also PHP to Java compiler. If I compile all my PHP code with it, does it mean my site is really written in Java?

comment What is meant by a primitive data type?
@Appy you can delete src.zip file and it wont have effect on inner workings of Java. The file is simply for the curious to better understand how basic classes are built. No idea about SNOBOL4 but it appears from quick googling that string is primitive type there. There is no char type in SNOBOL4, you can only have string of length 1 to represent it. The lack of ability to decompose SNOBOL4 string to something "smaller" makes this type primitive.

@Appy String in Java isn't primitive because it is a compound type. If you look at String class source code (src.zip in JDK folder) you will see, that internally String is represented as an array of characters. So you can decompose String into individual characters. You can't decompose character into smaller values which makes char a primitive type and String a compound type.

@MattyD If you want fancy installer for Windows, then have a look at Inno Setup. With a bit of effort to create config file and perhaps some scripting you will get a typical "feel" of Windows Installer.
