I'm a technologist available for hire in the West of England.

Right now I'm helping an insurance firm in London figure out how to deploy their code quickly and reliably without getting large numbers of people out of bed in the middle of the night.

Before this I was at Global Radio in Reading, having fun with AWS and some frankly strange quadratic equations. Previously I was with Nokia Entertainment in Bristol, optimising how music files are ingested and transcoded.

And before that, amongst other things, I was the Product Marketing Manager in Europe for Borland Delphi.

comment What's the best place for a high school programmer to get his work noticed?
+1 for "testing your capability in rapidly learning new things". Although knowledge is useful, aptitude is better.

comment “Overtime is part of the job” true but a bad attitude?
@Vatine @burnt_hand - it's quite usual for operations types to be paid overtime to be "on call", and sometimes I've seen developers get a cut for that too. For "business as usual" development, though, it's usually easier for manager-types to organise payment-in-kind, e.g. extra holiday.

comment Stuff every programmer needs while working
I use Ultimate Ears ear-buds: they totally blot out conversation in our open-plan office. Works a treat.

comment As a software engineer, who should I be following on Twitter?
@finnw - by following e.g. @newsycombinator I've found more blogs than I'd ever see any other way.

Eh? So I shouldn't listen to anyone else, who might know more than I do?

comment Effective Ways to Introduce Agile into the Workplace?
An awesome response. I've also found that adding high-value, low cost gee-gaws (like continuous integration) can help fly the flag.
