comment Why did SVG lose to Flash?
For me, RaphaelJS was pretty easy to pick up in a couple of hours and had the benefit of supporting IE 6 through VML.

comment How come there is still so much programming work?
@jd_504: As someone who does a lot of scientific computing, I can say that the difference between a quad core processor and a 32 core processor is very, very, relevant. As is the fact that a lot of software I use is not able to exploit those additional resources. Hence a need for more busy programmers.

comment What is the best toolkit for writing long technical texts?
@Joey: The breaking point for me is that I can never remember the exact incantation of mouse clicks and menu options in Word that finally got the page numbers/table of contents/whatever to behave. With LaTeX the exact steps are recorded in the last report I wrote, in black in white. In general, you only go through the pain of learning how to do something in LaTeX once. With word you go through it with each new version and, if you are forgetful, with each new document.

comment What should we tell our unsupported IE6 users?
Perhaps a friendly upgrade message? "Please, for the love of overworked web designers everywhere, upgrade your 10 year old browser. If your sysadmin refuses to do it, slap him. If you lack the authority to slap him, find someone who can."

comment How to open-source a project whose git repository has copyrighted media in the history?
@phyzome: Depends on how important you think the history is. Expunging is pretty easy with the filter-branch command---just make sure to run it on a clone of the repository as it is destructive and cannot be undone.

comment Cloud availability of short-term “virgin” Windows instances?
In my experience, rewinding to a VirtualBox snapshot takes about 5-10 seconds. Don't know if you'll be able to beat that with a VPS or cloud instance.

comment Use of pirated/cracked software for development
Another issue that factors heavily into this is that there is usually no way for individuals to attempt to negotiate for what they consider a "fair price" for software. You either pay what is asked, walk, or turn to piracy. Case in point: I ran a pirated copy of Vista for a while because there was no way I was willing to pay $200 for it, I was willing to go for $50 but there was no way to enter into a negotiation. When Windows 7 came out, I decided $200 was a fair price and bought a copy.

Very carefully.

comment What's the most used programming language in high performance computing? And why?
Fortran is common because many people use supercomputing time to run simulations of physical systems, such as global weather forecasting, and the implementation of the required algorithms in Fortran very clear and concise.
