revised Move on and look elsewhere, or confront the boss?
Added link to JoS Test, surprised it wasn't mentioned. Also wanted to stress other areas where an individual can make progress.

Buying can be a very touchy subject -- the perception is that you're trying to look good by paying for the employees, but you might just turn around and bill it to the company, making them feel like they'll be paying for it in the end -- answering to management for high bills or something. I would err on the side of disclosure -- note that I often simply pack my lunch which typically avoids this question -- I'd be happy to pay as long as those present understand that it is from my company's budget and will never be billed to their employer.

I have a suspicion that some of the down-voters (I didn't vote) may have questioned the 'one-on-one' tactic you suggest. I find that this may take many, especially the non-technical, outside their comfort zone. If anything, you want to keep the in-house people on their home turf. As a consultant, I would try not to take out less than two employees at a time, because of the perception that this is a 'fact-finding' mission which the more apprehensive envision to be a 'gossip-finding' mission -- ammunition for you to create dissension and distrust among the employees.

Wow. Had no idea. Since I switch btw Ubuntu & Windows, I just can't take a language where whitespace (tabs vs. spaces) matters...

I second the vote for learning SQL especially if your interested in high-frequency trading.
