Also, the halting problem is fascinating in and of itself though it is by no means the sum of all computer science. It's also not dealing with any "given" program, but rather it's that there is no algorithm for determining if an arbitrary program and input will eventually halt.

@GuySirton "CS tells you that you can't tell whether a given program will halt given a certain input." if that's all you think CS does, I think you might not know as much about CS as you think you do ...

@Steven A. Lowe: I know that's not an academic paper. This question is asking for academic papers. I gave that as a response to Oded and in reference to where I said in my question that I see it discussed on the internet, but was wondering if it extended into academia.
