I mostly do Erlang and CoffeeScript these days and am the author of "Building Web Applications in Erlang" and "Programming HTML5 Applications" Both of which were published by O'Reilly.

I am also very interested in the question, How do I become a great developer and spend a fair bit of time thinking about it.

I am also a compulsive writer. I love writing as it forces me to really think about what is important and how to make ideas seem more concreate

comment Is it worth converting a Django project to Rails?
Its a judgement call, I probably wound't unless learning ruby (or improving my ruby skills) was a goal I was working on.

5KLoc is not much for a team of developers, for 1 guy working on it on the weekends it is a chunk of code. I would not port it unless there was some really good reason. Python Django are a good framework

It is also kind of an issue as you have to assume that everyone has a suitable laptop for doing their job on. That may or may not be true

comment Why aren't design patterns added to the languages constructs?
There is a school of thought that says that having to many patterns is a language smell. For sure many patterns in GO4 book disappear or become a 1 liner in Lisp.

comment Is it worth moving from Microsoft tech to Linux, NodeJS & other open source frameworks to save money for a start-up?
If you are a C# guy feel free to use C#! you can use mono on linux or use a queue of some form to run that part on windows. The cost savings in terms of developer time will probably be a lot bigger than the hosting costs

comment How many make threads to use?
The only way to know is to test it write a shell script that iterates from 1 to say 50 and record what the wall clock time is for each. Maybe run each 5 times and take the average if you want to be a little more exact. In truth it probably won't matter too much set N = 8 or so and move on

comment Is it possible to develop an IOS application without a Mac?
No problem. For phonegap you can do most of your development in HTML and Javascript and you can use their build tool to do the actual building of the app. But you need a mac do some setup and you may need one to install the software on the device.
