comment Separate trackers for features and defects?
I don't work anymore with QC, but during that 4 years, unfortunately, I haven't found one QC-Jira bridge that would fit all. You might find something that works for you, but for me it was always per project approach. In my experience it all boiled down to self discipline of using both tools accordingly to team agreement based on what tool does best and what are our needs.

comment What's the *ISTQB* and are they trustable?
I fully agree, and I have ISTQB Foundation + Advanced Test Analyst. This paper just says you are familiar with some concepts, which often are very subjective (I mean exam answer key). Certificates don't say anything about person skills. Like MSc in CS - it says nothing about how skillful programmer you are.

comment Should Whitebox testers be involved in the software design process?
I agree, that for black-box tester this 'fresh pair of yes' is important. But still you can try to get tester, that won't be involved later in this project. If your place has its own QA team you could always ask someone to help.

comment Is the difference between BDD and TDD nothing more than a vocabulary shift?
I would say that TDD tests may reflect user stories, but they may also reflect vary low behavior of classes (or whatever unit is in your project), which itself is not story. For example class that handles sessions, may have tests that are hard to express from user POV. BDD will reflect user stories, without going into single class behavior.

comment Is software testing actually done on professional projects?
I work for pharmaceutical corporation. I would say that 80% of applications are tested by professional testers and developers. Those 20% are low risk applications like promotional presentation on iPad. but even this one is ad-hoc checked by someone.
