I have always thought of it as if you are on a road trip and get stuck looping through the drive through at McDonald's until they get your order correct and when you are done getting lunch, you continue on your journey.

Why do you think there no acceptable default values? I can't really think of anything that can't have a "dummy" value e.g. 127.0.0.1 for an IP address or fakedomain.com for a domain name.

Wow. I was going to write damn near the exact same real world example! I too develop machine vision software & inspection systems. From the abstraction of the cameras to the algorithms, I do the exact same thing.
