I'm a software developer. I graduated with my BCSc in 1999, and I've been working in the field ever since. My experience has been with C++, Delphi, Java, MSSQL, Oracle, ASP, JSP, and on and on and on.

comment How can I determine the level of talent a prospective programmer has?
@MichaelT Well put. I'm more meh with language, and just aim for basic ideas rather than well-good phrasing. See?

comment How can you have normal life when you're too passionate?
It's popular culture to believe in work-life balance. Everyone will tell you this, and some will demand it. But honestly consider this: Are you fulfilled by what you do? What is wrong with achieving success that brings enjoyment to your life? It's ok to like work. It's ok to do it as a hobby. Just keep careful track on your enjoyment level. If it becomes less enjoyable for you, it's time to change things up.

comment Typed search over complex model. Possible CQRS / NoSQL solution
You don't cut off the first query at 5000 items. You cut it off where there is a performance degradation. ~500,000 items. It's about accepting a realistic result vs a 'perfect' answer when you have limited resources.

It is indeed, but how much of one. How often have you looked through 10,000 items on an online shopping catalog.

Once I had added annotations, I created an indexed table of quick lookups of popular stemmed words / phrases in order to optimize the query. With record sets in the millions, tweaks are going to be necessary.

I should also add that I implemented a local login, facebook login, twitter login, and google+ login all from the same framework.

comment Coding styles when using several disparate libraries
Exactly the right solution imo. I use wrappers to tie up code that other people write for my projects as well. Define an interface up front, and then when they implement it, you can wrap it and black-box test it.

I like how this answer doesn't address the problem. Whimsical coding.

comment How to identify unstable floating point computations?
What about some injection style code that could comprehend mathematical operations, and then perform a reverse calculation? Testing the reverse of a single operation should return you to the original value, and the greater the difference, the greater the precision interfered with the calculation. Does this sound plausible? Are your operations reversible?
