comment How do I cope with a manager who’s always interfering in what I do, but doesn’t really understand it?
In case Job's answer went over anyone's head, the artist then easily removed the duck when the manager critisized the obvious problem with his work.

How the hell is this off-topic?!

Oops sorry you can't answer! This is totally offtopic! I really hate it when questions are closed after just 10 minutes because one person wrote a comment suggesting that the question is offtopic that got a couple of upvotes. This was on-topic enough to produce a useful/interesting answer.

comment Interesting interview question
@Dov: Well, there is more than one answerer here who insists that case 1 is faster, period. You mentioned a 68k but you can write code for a 6 core machine with 16MB of L1 cache, and case 2 can still be faster due to cache usage reasons (or many other reasons as we can see from other answers). Perhaps the job requires code that is performance sensitive -- would you want to hire someone that has no idea how to answer this other than to say "case 1 is always faster no matter what"?

@James: Actually no, even if the compiler is not allowed to optimize, there are many reasons why case 2 could be faster. Maybe A needs memory equal to the size of the L1 cache, then case 2 could be MUCH faster, as A and B wont be thrashing at the cache halfway through the loop. There are lots of other reasons why case 2 could be faster. See the other answers.

@Dov: Actually that's the exact reason why it is a good interview question.

There are dozens of possible reasons, certainly these are not "the only reasons", as you say.
